Fun Facts About Blood Donation:
A person who donates blood burns about 650 calories with every pint donated.
Blood has four main components: plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood. That means in the days prior to the accident, at least 100 donors took an hour out of their busy lives to donate blood. After blood is donated, it goes through a rigorous testing process and is shipped to area hospitals so the blood is on the shelf ready to be transfused for any patient in need.
One in seven people entering the hospital need blood.
The average adult has 10 pints of blood in their body. During the blood donation process a person roughly donates 1 pint. Your body will replenish what was taken.
Every 2 seconds someone in the US needs blood. Inova Blood Donor Services works to collect, test, and safeguard more than 250 units of blood a day to sure a safe, steady supply for you and your loved ones. There is no substitute for human blood. It can only come from a volunteer blood donors. 38% of population is eligible to donate, but less than 5% actually do.
Donation Methods:
§ Whole Blood- eligible every 56 days (products have a shelf life of 42 days)
§ Double Reds- eligible every 112 days (products have a shelf life of 42 days)
